Below are a few testimonials from people I've taught over the years.
David has been my guitar mentor for a long time. We have explored a wide range of stuff – from straight forward blues and rock, through jazz, ragtime, classical, Brazilian choro, samba, bossa, playing lead, rhythm, solo singing and even a bit of slide!
Acoustic, electric, nylon and don’t forget ukulele (even though you might like to). It has always been great fun, including his student concerts, despite (including??) the first performance nerves!
David is a gentle, responsive teacher who knows when to push you and when to consolidate. You always make progress, sometimes without realising it, and you always look forward to the next lesson!
My son really enjoys his guitar lessons with David. He makes the lessons fun and relaxed and is always encouraging. He has made great progress since starting with David and looks forward to his lessons each week.
David has been teaching my family for many years and has proven encouraging and flexible to meet our different desires and musical tastes. His approach, patience and knowledge have kept the interest of our daughter for over ten years from the age of 11, maintaining her passion and interest through all kinds of changes. He has also kept the adult students in the family engaged and still learning over the last decade, improving our ability to play solo and in a group.
David’s investment in his wider student community has been a great opportunity to find others to play alongside and the student concerts are brilliant fun. I particularly appreciate that David’s greatest desire is for people to progress at their own pace and to maintain their passion. I look forward to the next decade of learning with David!
Nan’s opinion: My daughter is really enjoying learning guitar with David. David is well organised and flexible. He also puts in extra effort to create an opportunity for students to play in front of other people.
Her daughter’s opinion: He is a well-talented teacher and always knows which areas need improvement in my playing. Whilst also focusing on grades he also balances the time to have fun (like learning some of my favourite songs). When finding problems/difficulties in my playing he puts a lot of effort into producing a good outcome. He also teaches me ways to quicken my learning and to make it easier.
When I retired I decided I needed a new challenge and chose to learn the ukulele. I also made the decision I wanted to learn music notation rather than reading TAB as I enjoy the cognitive challenge of identifying notes on the musical stave and then working out where I can find them on the fretboard! Not a surprise that I quickly realised I needed help and a friend recommended I contact David. David’s expert tuition and inspiration has motivated me to move on to learning the (electric) guitar and more recently to a classical guitar which I love.
I have no desire to be a performer but David doesn’t see that as an issue. There are times when I think he deserves a medal for his patience as he listens to my laboured playing but he never shows anything other than endless encouragement and support. Lessons with David are positive and constructive … and not to mention good fun.
I have been having electric guitar lessons with David for around a year now and find him to be an excellent teacher. As an older pupil David is very patient with my whims and limitations. He is happy to adapt his lessons to my ability and my preferred styles of music. I would thoroughly recommend him to anyone who is looking to start or advance their playing.
David is a very professional, knowledgeable and enthusiastic guitar teacher who makes the lessons engaging, productive and enjoyable. My son has progressed significantly since starting lessons with David. I would highly recommend him.
I’ve been having lessons with David for a couple of years now, starting as a complete beginner with the ukulele and moving on to the acoustic guitar, having both Skype and face to face lessons. He not only teaches how to play the instruments, but an understanding of music notes and timing, different ways of playing chords and covers a wide variety of music styles. David is an extremely talented musician, who is a very patient and encouraging teacher who makes learning fun, and I would highly recommend him.
I’ve been a student of David’s since late 2017, learning the ukulele and now guitar. As a (very) mature student I have been consistently impressed with David’s patient and calm teaching style, as well as his understanding that “life” often gets in the way of hobbies.
I would have no hesitation in recommending David as a teacher to anyone of any age who wishes to learn the ukulele or guitar from an experienced, knowledgeable teacher.
My son has been having guitar lessons with David for more than 3 years now. Throughout all these years, David has always been very helpful and accommodating in all aspects. He is always available if you need any advice either for choosing the appropriate instrument, help and advice with taking the grade exams, or basically anything guitar related !
Thank you David for always being so patient and flexible with your pupils!

Hi David,
Just wanted to send a quick note ahead of tonight’s lesson to say how much I’ve enjoyed the live stream sessions.
Wasn’t sure how easy it would be trying to learn via a PC but it was really good & felt like a face to face lesson (without the rush of driving to a class!) Your teaching style is great & the Guitar Quest book is really well put together.
I love the way you’ve explained and presented things – giving lots of useful tips on how to remember and approach stuff and providing interesting background information too.
The backing tracks are a great idea and make learning/playing much more fun.
Fantastic to have all the lessons and resources to refer back to (via your website) – for me this is really helpful as I have often found I need to recap things to try and help make them stick.
